THE SOLAR FURNACE AT ODEILLO
The Great Solar Furnace at Odeillo is situated in the Cedagne, in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park, and is the worldwide symbol of solar energy in France.
The site is remarkable for the number, hours and quality of direct sunshine (about 2,750 hours per year) as well as for the purity of the atmosphere there.
It is a major French scientific heritage site.
It was the first semi-industrial solar furnace to be built in the world, and since 2009 its parabola has been listed as a Historic Monument. It is home to the internationally renowned PROMES* laboratory, part of to the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
